Is your furnace acting out, but you’re unsure what may be going on? From your furnace shutting off over and over to equipment that blows cool air, there are many reasons your furnace could be acting out. Fortunately, when it comes to furnaces, the HVAC experts at Milford Heating & Cooling have been around the block or two and can provide some answers to your common heating questions below:

Why Does My Furnace Keep Shutting Down?

We realize having a furnace that repeatedly keeps shutting down can be frustrating, and unfortunately, you are not the only homeowner that experiences this issue. Furnaces can do this for several reasons, among them being a clogged air filter. If that is the case, exchange the old one for a fresh, clean air filter. Dirty, clogged air filters are one of the most common causes of restricted airflow reaching the furnace’s heat exchanger, which could be the potential cause of your furnace repeatedly shutting down.

Why is My Furnace Distributing Cold Air?

Cool air blowing from your furnace is a not-so-good sign for your heating equipment. The duty of your furnace is to provide heat for your home, not cool air. At Milford Heating & Cooling, we want nothing but the best for you and your loved ones, meaning a warm, comfortable home this winter. If you have not done so already, check the pilot light on your furnace to make sure it is ignited. If your pilot light is not lit, you will need to do so. Directions should be provided on the side of the furnace with steps to help you light your pilot light back up.

Why Are Unusual Noises Coming From My Furnace?

Furnaces are not supposed to make weird noises at all; however, if you hear a rattling coming from your unit, it may be due to loose screws. Start your inspection by scanning the area near your residential furnace for loose screws or any components that may have fallen off. If you hear any strange noises such as buzzing, banging, or humming, you should also inspect for holes or tears in ductwork and loose panels on your furnace. If you’re still having issues even after reviewing your equipment and not finding anything, we recommend calling up your local HVAC contractor for assistance.

Why are Funny Smells Coming From My Furnace?

Is there an unusual or funny smell coming from your residential furnace? If so, investigate the situation by determining and locating where it is coming from. You will want to start by checking out your furnace’s air filters. The air pollutants inside your home can clog up your air filters a lot faster than most people think, so we suggest keeping an eye out and exchanging the dirty filter with a clean one at least once a month. If your furnace is still giving off a funny smell, remember, you just turned it on for the first time since the last winter season.

Is My Thermostat the Cause of My Furnace Not Working?

Be mindful when troubleshooting your furnace shut down because your thermostat may ultimately be the culprit. Unfortunately, when furnace issues rise, homeowners tend to forget that the home’s thermostat could hugely contribute to the problems at hand. So, you will want to ensure your thermostat’s fan settings are set to “auto.” Your furnace will continuously run if the thermostat’s fan settings are set to “on,” causing the furnace to malfunction.

Overall, with all of these things considered, furnaces can be difficult to manage when they have problems. At Milford Heating & Cooling, we hope our helpful advice and tips will leave you prepared to take on the rest of the winter season here in Ohio.
